Avoid allergic reaction to eyelash extensions
Jul 12, 2024
As eyelash extensions continue to be popular, there are more and more cases of allergies. Why are eyelash extensions allergic? Some customers have no problem using the same glue all the time, but some customers become allergic when touched? With the same glue, allergic cases rarely occur in some stores, but occur frequently in other stores? Is there any scientific way to prevent allergies?
▲Among all skins, the thickness of eye skin is the thinnest, only about one-third of facial skin, with an average thickness of only 0.5mm, so eye skin is more prone to allergies.
Eye skin allergies caused by the eyelash grafting process are most likely caused by: eyelash glue, grafting tweezers, eye patch tape, eyelash removal products, etc..., most common allergic item is lash extension adhesive.
▲Why does eyelash extension glue cause allergies?
The most likely cause of allergies during the grafting process is glue (Eyelash Glue). Let us analyze the reasons:
1. Glue ingredients
◎Adhesive ingredient: Cyanoacrylate, generally 80%~90%
◎Tackifying ingredients: PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), etc., about 10%
◎Coloring ingredient: carbon black, used for coloring, containing trace amounts
◎Solvent component: volatilize the binding agent and increase the curing speed.
2. How the lash extension adhesive works
Polymerization reaction: The glue combines with the water vapor in the air to evaporate the solvent. The joint polymerizes and releases heat to solidify the contact surface. Since the solvent evaporates instantly, an odor will be smelled.
Whitening phenomenon: The evaporated vapor of unhardened glue remains near the joint, and there is a lot of moisture around it. The monomer vapor and moisture produce low polymer and appear white. This is why glue turns white when exposed to water.
3. Allergy caused by solvent evaporation
The glues on the market now generally contain solvents. The solvent is equivalent to a gripper, which can quickly grab the moisture in the air and force it to polymerize with the glue. The faster-drying glue tends to have a higher solvent content and the faster it cures. The evaporation of the solvent will come into contact with the eye skin, which may cause a series of uncomfortable symptoms such as eyelid redness and swelling for customers with sensitive skin.
4. We have a hypoallergenic extension glue, a trace amount of special solvent is added to the glue, the curing speed is about 2-3 seconds, and the probability of allergies is greatly reduced than ordinary glue, pls check this link to find it: ![]()
5. Thermal allergy caused by polymerization reaction
If no solvent is added to the glue, will allergic symptoms not occur?
The working principle of glue is a polymerization reaction with water in the air, which is an exothermic process. The eye skin is very delicate. If the customer's eye skin is sensitive, thermal allergy symptoms will occur if the glue polymerization reaction is overheated.
Therefore, be sure to blow-dry your eyelashes before your lash extension appointments, and fully dry your eyelashes after grafting. When grafting, the amount of glue taken is very important. If the amount of glue taken is too large, the glue may only be solidified on the surface after grafting, and there will still be unvolatile solvent inside the glue. After the customer goes back to wash his face, the volatility of the glue will be brought out. This is The reason why customers will feel eye irritation only after a few days after grafting.
▲How to avoid allergy to lash extensions and lash adhesive?
1. Use safe and healthy eyelash products and do not use low-priced and inferior products.
2. During the grafting process, try not to use tape to pull the eyelids. On the one hand, if the customer's eyes cannot be closed tightly, the solvent volatilization can easily irritate the customer's eyes and cause them to become red and itchy. On the other hand, many tapes (especially PE tapes) themselves are also one of the allergens causing contact allergies.
3. Try to use hypoallergenic glue during grafting. The probability of allergies will be greatly reduced.
4. Care must be taken before grafting. The eyelashes must be dried before grafting. After the grafting is completed, use a hair dryer for more than 5 minutes to dry the eyelashes completely before asking the customer to open their eyes.
5. For customers who are prone to allergies, you can apply a layer of isolation cream on the eyes, and then apply a thin layer of chlortetracycline ointment or erythromycin ointment, which can play a heat insulation role to a certain extent and reduce the probability of thermal allergies.
